Lorna Smith - British Rally Champion
My interest in motorsport started from a young age. I grew up in a farm near Aberdeen, my Father being a keen rallying man himself, taught myself and my sisters to drive and use to set up courses in the fields that we could race around.
After my first year of studying engineering at Edinburgh University, I decided to save up my student loan and with a little help from Dad, bought a Nova to go racing in. I started off in hillclimbs and sprints, which are tarmac races, where your timed against the clock. After a few years of that, and eventually gaining the respect of all my male and female collegues I decided to head into rallying. It took a while, but with a lot of practice and determination I got a 2 year deal with Eddie Stobarts to do the British Rally Championship and last year landed a semi-works drive with Suzuki doing the British and Irish Rally Championship.
“I think carbuyher is a great idea. It can be difficult being a woman in a man’s world, but carbuyher gives woman an opportunity to find out more about cars without the risk of feeling intimidated.”
