Chester salon owner Tommy van der Veken from Tommy’s Hair Company was elated at the weekend when he met with his all time hairdressing idol - Vidal Sassoon. A night to remember, Tommy was in the company of some of Britain’s finest hairdressers as he took part in the Alternative Hair Visionary Awards in London’s Royal Albert Hall and had the once in a lifetime chance to meet with the inspirational Vidal Sassoon. A personal message of good luck was also extended to Tommy from Vidal before the Visionary Awards.
The night before Tommy and Business Partner Esther Prins also attended a dinner party in London for Vidal Sassoon’s 80th Birthday. Wining and dining with Vidal Sassoon and a carefully selected group of leading hairdressers from all over the world at his Birthday celebrations made it a night to remember. 
Vidal Sassoon has always been such an inspirational figure within my hairdressing career and I cannot believe I have actually been able to meet him. I was so excited and overwhelmed when Vidal came and spoke to Esther and myself at our table and even signed the shirt I was wearing! I have always hugely admired Vidal’s work and continuously strive to create amazing styles as he did and I feel his works is mirrored within my own

The Alternative Hair Visionary Award celebrates the artistic and creative talent of UK based Hairdressers and this year, the ten carefully selected hairdressers were asked to create a look, which paid homage to an industry icon – Vidal Sassoon. Tommy presented a creative and beautiful look that fused both the original Sassoon technique along with Tommy’s individual style. Tommy perfected a beautiful sharp Sassoon inspired bob which was then dressed in a fabulous creation to represent a headdress. The stunning model took a bow and removed the headdress to reveal the Sassoon inspired style. Tommy took a classic technique and added a contemporary twist to it.
The evening was a resounding success with all proceeds being donated to Leukaemia Research. Tommy was honoured to be part of the evening and felt it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to present his model to Vidal Sassoon.
